It’s looking good for Thailand in 2015 as tourism takes off in January

Feb 3, 2015

It’s been though over the past year or so but Thailand expects to enjoy a steady increase in international visitor numbers and revenue in the first quarter of this year, following a strong growth in January. With high demand from the China market for the Chinese New Year holiday period, the promotional efforts by the kingdom’s tourism stakeholders to attract more tourists is paying off.

Visit Pattaya Thailand

In January 2015, Thailand welcomed a total of 2.65 million foreign tourists and generated about 120 billion Baht in revenue, representing a year-on-year increase of 15.9 per cent and 12.7 per cent, respectively.

H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports said, “The strong performance in January can be attributed to the significant growth in tourist arrivals at international airports throughout the kingdom, with China being the largest market. We expect to continue to enjoy a steady increase in the first quarter, especially in February due to the high demand from the China market during this coming Lunar New Year.”

Thailand is home to the world’s largest Chinatown (in Yaowarat, Bangkok), which is also the location for the nation’s biggest Chinese New Year celebrations. But travellers are also invited to enjoy a rich and diverse cultural mix of festivities that take place at key destinations up and down the kingdom, including Phuket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Trang, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Songkhla (Hat Yai), Ayutthaya, Chon Buri (Pattaya), and Chiang Mai.

With Thai Airways offering direct flights into the country with its modern aircraft fleet and the continue improvements to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok the country is not only a great location for tourists but also for business travellers. The country provides ideal facilities for business conferences and trade shows and with the continual improvement to an already impressive airport, as reported in the Bangkok Post, its popularity should continue.

To ensure a steady growth for Thailand’s tourism, the Thai government is working on a number of policies and strategies to attract international visitors to visit the kingdom and to encourage Thai people to take more trips within the country. They include the launch of the “2015 Discover Thainess” campaign, as a way to promote Thailand’s natural and cultural assets among Thais and foreigners as well as to pass on the Thai way of happiness to international visitors.

Thailand Events and Festivals

In addition, last week, the government announced that Monday, 4 May, 2015, will be an extra holiday (ideal for Star Wars fans!) with the objective of promoting tourism as a long holiday, from 1-5 May, would encourage Thais to travel and would boost the economy.

H.E. Kobkarn said, “Thailand will also continue to enhance cooperation across the spectrum of tourism to promote intra-ASEAN tourism as well as position the region as a single tourist destination. And, along with all our ASEAN neighbours, we will continue to forge stronger collaborations with our global partners under the ASEAN plus China, Japan, Republic of Korea cooperation mechanism, or the ASEAN+3 Framework.”

In order to ensure a strong presence for Thai tourism in the global market, Thailand through the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will continue to be presented at all major and important travel trade shows as well as organise regular road shows to update all tourism offers to any potential market.

Singapore Airlines Deepens Ties With Tourism Australia

Nov 10, 2014

Singapore Airlines and Tourism Australia have announced plans to deepen their existing commercial partnership by signing a new, three-year strategic marketing deal worth a total of A$12 million.

The agreement will see the two parties jointly fund a range of tourism campaigns and promotional activities in seven key inbound markets –
Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, the UK, Germany and China.

Singapore Airlines will be the exclusive airline partner for all Restaurant Australia campaigns in Singapore, India, Indonesia and Malaysia as well as provide international flights for Tourism Australia’s key Corroboree Europe trade event, taking place in Adelaide in 2015.

Mr Mak Swee Wah, Singapore Airlines’ Executive Vice President Commercial, said that the strategic partnership with Tourism Australia continues to be key in driving inbound tourism.

“As the world competes to attract visitors from key growth markets, Singapore Airlines continues to invest in promoting Australia, building on its long-standing presence and ongoing expansion across the country’s key gateways.”

“Combining Tourism Australia’s marketing prowess with Singapore Airlines’ network reach remains a winning proposition in key target markets to bring travelers to Australia. Leveraging the opportunities presented across Europe and Asia in partnership with Tourism Australia enables us to reach better conversion rates and cement Singapore as the optimal gateway hub to Australia.”

Tourism Australia Managing Director John O’Sullivan said Singapore Airlines’ support for Restaurant Australia included providing flights for more than 30 top Asian food and wine influences taking part in the campaign finale – a countrywide media familiarisation and gala dinner at MONA in Tasmania on the 14th November.

“Asia continues to be a powerhouse for Australian tourism. As one of the region’s largest international carriers serving all of Australia’s capital cities, Singapore Airlines is a critical airline partner for us as we seek to drive further growth in our  international arrivals,” he said.

Outside of New Zealand, Singapore is the most connected city to Australia. In recent years, Singapore has emerged as one of Australia’s most important inbound tourism markets. It is currently Australia’s fifth largest source market for international tourists with visitors from Singapore generating A$1.1 billion in total expenditure in 2013.

There were 368,400 visitors from Singapore in the 12 month period ending 30th September 2014, an annual increase of 14.4 per cent. The Tourism 2020 strategy estimates that the Singapore market has the potential to grow to between A$2.3 billion and A$2.8 billion in total expenditure by 2020.

SAS launches nine new routes with 2015 Summer Sale

Nov 4, 2014

SAS is opening ticket sales for its new routes, with departures from several Scandinavian airports. The summer timetable offers nine new routes to attractive holiday destinations and major European cities. SAS will also continue to operate many of its popular 2014 summer routes, with additional departures on inter-Scandinavian routes.

SAS Summer Flight Sale

On Wednesday 5th November ticket sales will open for SAS’s summer timetable 2015, which will gradually come into operation from 29th March. SAS customers can look forward in the spring to being able to fly direct between Copenhagen and the cities of Edinburgh and Ankara; between Stockholm and the cities of Ankara, Budapest and Faro; between Oslo and Salzburg and between Gothenburg and the cities of Alanya, Dublin and Bergen.

Executive Vice President at SAS, Eivind Roald said “SAS has been expanding its route network for some time now, with several new destinations and routes, and we are continuing to improve the range of destinations we offer to our customers. We have launched 100 new routes over the last two years, and next year we are adding nine more.”

New Routes To European Cities

SAS is opening six new direct routes from Scandinavian airports to major European cities, two of which are completely new routes: for the first time, SAS customers can fly to Salzburg and Ankara with SAS for their summer vacation. Ankara, capital and second-largest city in Turkey, will be the second Turkish destination served by SAS, Gazipasa near Alanya being the first.

“SAS has more destinations and more departures than any other Scandinavian airline. We know that frequent travelers prefer SAS – including when they go on vacation. So we are always offering new, attractive routes and destinations, with a focus next year on Turkey, Hungary and Austria,” continued Eivind Roald.

More Departures Between Scandinavian Airports

As well as launching nine new summer routes, including a new inter-Scandinavian route between Bergen and Gothenburg, SAS is adding more frequencies on inter-Scandinavian routes in winter 2014/2015 and will continue to do so into summer 2015. This includes more direct flights between Stavanger and Trondheim and between Bergen and Ålesund. The Copenhagen-Gothenburg route is getting two additional daily departures, bringing the total to eight in the summer timetable. The Stockholm-Gothenburg route is also getting a new morning departure on Mondays in both directions.

Popular Holiday Destinations

In addition to the new routes, SAS is also re-opening its popular 2014 holiday destinations in the 2015 summer timetable. So SAS customers can still look forward to flying with SAS to popular destinations such as Chania, Palermo and Pisa.
