The 517-seater A380 aircraft increases Qatar Airways’ current daily capacity by 44 per cent on this route to meet the growing travel and trade demand.

Short-haul keeps getting better with Finnair as Wi-Fi added to Airbus fleet

Sep 2, 2016

Flying short-haul with Finnair has had it’s bonuses. Flying from Heathrow you might just get an A350 or A330 to fly to Helsinki on – great especially in Business Class! But now Finnair has signed an agreement with ViaSat, a global broadband services and technology company, to install a high-speed wireless internet network on its entire Airbus A320 series short-haul fleet flying in Europe. The installation of the Wi-Fi equipment will begin in May 2017, and will be completed by June 2018.

Wi-Fi on Finnair Airbus Short-Haul Fleet

With a connection speed of 12 Mbps or higher per passenger, the new system will offer the fastest in-flight internet connection currently available on the market, which will also enable the use of increasingly popular video streaming services. ViaSat will ensure end-to-end in-flight connectivity service across the Finnair fleet, and has partnered with Eutelsat to deliver the high-speed satellite-based internet service, which will cover the entire European continent.

“Our customers increasingly value the possibility of being connected during their flights and this change will also create great opportunities for Finnair to further develop its in-flight portal that will serve customers with news, entertainment and great shopping opportunities on their portable devices,” says Piia Karhu, SVP, Customer Experience Development at Finnair.

“We are very pleased to partner with ViaSat on this project as we will be able to offer our customers the best possible Wi-Fi offering available on the market today, and that has the ability to scale, once the installations are completed.”

“Finnair is a forward-looking airline that is recognised worldwide for customer service,” says Don Buchman, vice president and general manager, Commercial Mobility at ViaSat.

“With the ViaSat in-flight Wi-Fi system, enabled across Europe by Eutelsat’s service, Finnair can deliver greater value to its customers by giving them the freedom to use their own device to engage with the internet in new ways – from enhanced online shopping to out-of-the-box online entertainment experiences.”

Last July, Finnair announced that its entire long-haul fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft would be retrofitted with Wi-Fi connectivity by May 2017. Finnair is currently operating six A350-XWB aircraft which already offer wireless connectivity for its passengers. The airline is expected to receive an additional five A350 aircraft by the end of next year. With both the long-haul and short-haul fleet set to offer internet connectivity by June 2018, over a thousand route pairs in Finnair’s network will offer Wi-Fi connectivity for transiting passengers. Additionally, Finnair’s Wi-Fi coverage over Chinese airspace has recently been opened, having been closed previously due to limitations by the authorities.

Finnair’s wireless internet access is free for Business class passengers, Finnair Plus Gold and Platinum customers, and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald level customers. Economy class passengers can purchase internet access at an hourly rate or for the duration of the flight.

New Renaissance Paris Republique Hotel Opens

May 4, 2016

Renaissance  has opened its sixth hotel in the emerging neighbourhood of La Republique, Paris. Located near Le Marais and Canal Saint Martin, Renaissance Republique, a former home for travelling artists, is ideal for experiencing the City of Lights’ newest ‘it’ district in style.

Inspired by the bohemian soul of the Republique district, the hotel has been modelled by renowned interior designer Didier Gomez. Best known for his creations for Yves Saint Laurent, LVMH, De Beers, among others, his interiors give an overall contemporary feel with exotic woods and tawny leather contrasted with contemporary artwork in the guestrooms and public spaces. Gomez’s design, a generous melting pot fitting with today’s Paris, includes cross-cultural features including a sculpture from African in the lobby, furnishings from Asia in the guestrooms and local Parisian street art throughout. In his design, Gomez has brought the outside in with tree motifs in the guest rooms, cloud shaped ceiling lights and a specular vegetation wall on the expansive outdoor terrace.

Renaissance Hotels recently announced its new global “Fearlessly Chic” design philosophy where indigenous touch points infused into the design of each unique location capture a spirit of wanderlust to inspire guests to explore the neighbourhood and discover the unexpected.

“Today’s Next Generation business traveller has a desire for discovery and wanderlust. We are so pleased to be adding the Renaissance Republique to our Paris portfolio, where Renaissance Hotels have been so well received, to enable our guests to discover this thriving area of the city.” says Amy McPherson, president and managing director, Marriott International, Europe.

Hotel Guest Rooms

The 121 rooms, inspired by local artist workshops, feature natural wood and earth tones, which complement Tom Dixon’s “Art et Floritude” modern lighting, while vintage furniture by Jean Prouvet and Charlotte Perriand reflect the hotel’s unusual heritage.

“We designed Renaissance Republique with the local community in mind, first and foremost. We wanted to create a neighbourhood destination as we believe this is what today’s Next Generation traveller seeks from a stay,” explains Gomez. “The hotel features a high-low design approach that harmoniously incorporates luxurious high-end finishes with raw, gritty, concrete surfaces. Bold, contemporary and locally-inspired elements are infused into the various spaces to captivate locals and guests and create moments of discovery.”

With six categories of rooms available, the Renaissance Republique offers some of the city’s largest hotel living space. The crowning glory is the Penthouse Suite with a private terrace complete with Jacuzzi and outdoor cinema, with stunning views over northern Paris and the Sacré-Cœur basilica of Montmartre.

In addition to its Parisian charm, guests can expect the signature touches found across Renaissance Hotels that a feed the curiosity, fuel the imagination and excite the senses of guests, including complimentary vintage bicycles for guests to discover Paris and mixology kits in the guestrooms.

Origin Restaurant

Classic French dishes with local provenance are the order of the day at ‘Origin’, headed up by renowned Chef Bénédicte Van der Motte. Having previously worked with revered chefs Yannick Alléno & Eric Fréchon, Bénédicte brings a wealth of expertise to the hotel. Her menus exude bright and refreshing seasonal flavours and include a selection of delectable French dishes such as green asparagus and artichoke ‘Poivrade’ fresh egg bouillade; and Parmesan cheese and Rump of veal with green peas mousseline and shallots.

Martin Bar

The hotel’s Martin Bar, serving signature cocktails and a bespoke bar menu, adds a special touch to the classic dining experience. Meticulously designed by Didier Gomez, Martin Bar embodies the glamour of Paris, adding to the hotel’s intimate feel. Traditional French pastries, including Carron éclairs and fruit tarts accompany afternoon Claus Paris teas, whilst the evening drinks menu is accompanied by a selection of tempting amuse-bouche including a local cheese plate; sliced Bayonne ham; and homemade marinated salmon or duck rillettes with homemade bread.

Wizz Air triples Canary Islands links from Budapest

Apr 28, 2016

Budapest Airport has announced today that Wizz Air will be adding another two new flight routes from the Hungarian gateway this winter to the Canary Islands. Having already celebrated four of the ultra-low-cost carrier’s new routes this year, and with three further destinations still to launch, Wizz Air has confirmed new connections to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, set to start from 30th October and 2nd November respectively.

Adding to its Tenerife operation, Wizz Air’s new weekly services will triple its links between Budapest and the Canary Islands, and as new destinations for both the airport and the airline, the low cost airline faces no competition from either of the airports. Confirming the addition of two further Spanish winter sun resorts, means Budapest’s fourth largest country market now has nine connections, with close to 10,000 weekly seats available.

Wizz Air Increases Flights to Canary Islands

Wizz Air launched Budapest Airport’s first flights to Tenerife last October

Commenting on the announcement, Kam Jandu, CCO, Budapest Airport said: “Wizz Air has seen the potential in connecting Budapest to our missing links in the Canary Islands, meaning we can now offer our passengers a full service to the four main islands of the Spanish archipelago. We are continuing to charge ahead in the first quarter of 2016, and the ongoing support of our home-based carrier is another sign of the promising year ahead.”

Budapest Airport has shown an average passenger traffic growth of over 13% during the first three months of 2016. Welcoming a quarter of a million more passengers than this time last year, the Hungarian gateway is firmly on the road to reaching its targeted 10.9 million passengers for 2016.

It’s not just the colour scheme of the cabin that gives you that Scandinavian feeling when you are onboard, Finnair has also been working with Finnish chefs to provide the best parts of Nordic and international kitchens aboard their flights.
