Time Flies with Page & Cooper’s Pilot Watches

Sep 30, 2015

Pilot watches have been a necessity for most pilots for decades, with their original features and classic designs proving highly popular. Pilot watches are specially designed to provide maximum comfort for long distance journeys and with the face of the watch designed to be easily readable in all lighting conditions. Often designed to be unconditionally functional for the most demanding conditions which is crucial for pilots.

Page and Cooper are independent fine watch specialists, providing an expert service for a wide range of high quality timepieces. Page and Cooper’s pilot watches collection are perfect for any style or price range. Here we have selected 5 of our favourites to showcase to you.Page and Cooper’s pilot watches Laco Tokio

One of the original pilot watches came for the brand Laco, who Page and Cooper are proud to be the official UK distributers of. With over 90 years of watch making experience, the Laco Tokio watch is a perfect match for all pilots. With sapphire crystal making up the dial glass and smooth leather strap, this watch manages to incorporate a luxury style with practical design. It still has the features of an original pilot watch with luminous hands and numbers and a 50m water resistance adding that practical element.

Fortis have become a world leader in manufacturing watches for aviation. Another watch that reflects the traditional pilot watch design from the Fortis range is the Aviatis Flieger Cockpit. With a strikingly clear dial and a unique design which focus on the main elements of the Flieger Classic giving the watch its name. This watch gives a more youthful design with the split coloured face of the watch, as well as contributing to making it unmissable in all lighting conditions.

The Fortis Aviatis Daybreaker Stealth is an elegant and unique timepiece which consists of more than 500 micro-mechanical parts, making it one of the most complicated yet amazing watches ever made. A chronograph alarm, water resistant to 200m and with white superluminal coated numbers, indices and hands these are just some of the things that make this Fortis watch extraordinary.

The next watch I’ve chosen in the pilot range is one of great quality and packed with features essential for a pilots watch. The Damasko DC56 is an all-black, smart design, perfect for the more subtle watch wearers who will love its more technical flair. With a day/date window, self-winding mechanical movement and shockproof features this watch means business. Renowned for being tough-wearing and suitable for extreme weather temperatures Damasko watches are perfect for any pilot.

Another watch from the Page and Cooper pilot range is the Sinn 900 Diapal, this watch combines a range of different Sinn technologies to offer maximum reliability for time measurement and functionality. A special design feature on this watch is the Ar-Dehumidifing technology to prevent fogging in the watch face and ensures clear visibility which is crucial for a pilots watch. It also offers practical features such as American and European conversion tracking scales, perfect for pilots who are traveling through different time zones. This stainless steel watch is visually stunning, making it a potentially multifunctional watch which can be worn on most occasions.

Air New Zealand bring you Men in Black Safety Defenders #AirNZSafetyVideo

Aug 13, 2015

We keep saying it – Air New Zealand has done it again!

The airline has teamed up with the All Blacks and an all-star line-up of international rugby greats to tackle the airline’s latest on board safety video, Men in Black Safety Defenders.

Inspired by the Columbia Pictures global film franchise Men in Black, Air New Zealand’s latest safety instalment features All Blacks’ Captain Richie McCaw and Dan Carter as Men in Black agents.

Starring alongside the two long-serving All Blacks is Coach Steve Hansen, team mates Kieran Read, Keven Mealamu, Sam Whitelock and Israel Dagg who gets to test his vocals alongside Kiwi musician Stan Walker.

American actor Rip Torn reprises his role as Chief of the Men in Black with Wallabies great David Campese, former England Captain Martin Johnson and former Argentinean Captain Agustin Pichot making cameo appearances.

Men in Black Safety Defenders

The video was created in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment‘s Content Licensing group, with additional support from Sony Pictures Imageworks and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Archives & Collections.

“The creative concept and the parallels drawn between the All Blacks and the Men in Black are really clever. It’s been exciting to help Air New Zealand bring the Men in Black universe to life in this unique way,” says Emmanuelle Borde, Executive Vice President, Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Air New Zealand Head of Global Brand Development Jodi Williams says the airline is Crazy About Rugby making the All Blacks the perfect partner for its latest safety offering.

“We recently extended our sponsorship of the All Blacks and New Zealand Rugby through until 2020 and thought what better way to celebrate than with a safety video.”

“We’ve worked with the All Blacks on previous safety videos and thought it would be fun this time around to have them step into the shoes of the other highly trained Men in Black. The result is not only entertaining but makes people sit up and take notice of the key safety messages.”

All Blacks Captain Richie McCaw says the players had a great time making the video.

“We had a lot of laughs on set and were blown away by Israel’s hidden singing talent. If rugby doesn’t work out for him he clearly has a promising career as a back-up singer.”

Israel Dagg says growing up he was a huge fan of the Men in Black films.

“I grew up listening to the iconic Men in Black movie soundtrack song. Hopefully I’ve done it some justice.”

Australian Wallabies great David Campese admitted his appearance in Men in Black Safety Defenders is likely to come at a cost.

“I’m expecting to get a right ribbing from my mates for appearing in a video promoting the All Blacks, Australia’s key opponents. They’ll never let me live it down.”

Former Argentina Captain Agustin Pichot and Martin Johnson, former England Captain shared his sentiment.

“The All Blacks are staunch rivals of the Pumas making it especially fun to play the role of their nemesis in Air New Zealand’s new safety video,” says Mr Pichot.

“I’m a big fan of Air New Zealand so was excited to get the call up to appear in the airline’s latest inflight video. I’m sure English rugby fans will have a few words to say about my appearance alongside the All Blacks too,” says Mr Johnson.

New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Officer Steve Tew says it’s a big year for the All Blacks and with plenty of travel on the cards the team was keen to be involved in delivering the airline’s safety briefing to fellow customers.

“Air New Zealand’s been a long-time supporter of the All Blacks and New Zealand Rugby and has played a crucial role in connecting the team to fans across the globe through inventive and colourful marketing efforts such as this.”

Men in Black Safety Defenders will be progressively rolled out across Air New Zealand’s fleet from today.

They should include the new uniforms too!

Pilots show how to land a British Airways Airbus A320 at Funchal Airport

Jun 10, 2015

A new video from British Airways now gives its passengers a pilot’s eye view of landing into one of its newest and tricky destinations – Funchal, on the island of Madeira.

The airport – one of the most challenging landings on the airline’s worldwide network – requires special approval from the Portuguese aviation authority for pilots to fly there. British Airways’ expert pilot training team created a bespoke plan that has received approval and allowed the airline to start flying to Funchal.

Pilots flying the three times a week service from Gatwick must undergo specialist training, including flight simulation to study every aspect of the approach in detail.

The airline started flying three times a week from Gatwick to Funchal on May 11, 2015.

In this video two of the airline’s highly trained pilots, British Airways Captains Ally Wilcox and Ian Mills, show how it’s done.

Funchal Approach

British Airways Captain Ally Wilcox, said: “Our highest priority is always safety. It’s built into everything we do, including our approved plan for flights to this airport.”

“While we will be focused on the technical aspects of the landing procedure, our customers will be able to enjoy the great views of the Atlantic and the beautiful island of Madeira.”

Flights to Funchal can be booked on ba.com with each-way fares starting from £61.

Can you hack a plane and take control?

May 18, 2015

Can you really hack a plane and gain control or is this just ‘pie in the sky’?

Recent reports regarding Security researcher Chris Roberts, United and the FBI have highlighted possible issues with the vulnerability of airline Inflight Entertainment Systems.

Feds Say That Banned Researcher Commandeered a Plane

A security researcher kicked off a United Airlines flight last month after tweeting about security vulnerabilities in its system had previously taken control of an airplane and caused it to briefly fly sideways, according to an application for a search

Hack A Plane

Previous reports in the press say that Chris was able to alter power and direction of aircraft.

Hacker made a plane fly sideways from his seat

A Colorado computer hacker told the FBI that he briefly made an airliner fly sideways by hacking its computer system, according to a report. Chris Roberts, who runs a cybersecurity consulting firm, told FBI agents in Syracuse in April that he pulled
As yet the aircraft manufactures haven’t been talking about the possible consequences if someone can hack a plane or if they believe their aircraft are open to such threats. In the meantime Chris wont be saying too much at the moment.

At the moment we await any further information but all of this isn’t new. If it is possible to hack a plane and take control through the IFE you would hope that the right people are on the case. In the meantime flying is still one of the safest forms of transport so do enjoy your travels.

Airbus E-Fan electric plane project takes off with new factory in Pau

May 1, 2015

Airbus Group has agreed with the Aquitaine region to build the Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the Airbus E-Fan 2.0 all-electric aircraft in Pau, southwest France.

The decision was announced by Airbus Group Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Jean Botti and Alain Rousset, President of the Aquitaine region, during a press conference in Bordeaux, the capital city of Aquitaine.

“We have reached the next milestone in our Airbus Group E-Aircraft roadmap. The industrialisation of our Airbus E-Fan aircraft will help us to advance electric flight and also to gain experience to scale up the technology,” said Jean Botti, Airbus Group CTO.

Airbus Group will invest € 20 million in the overall design and development of the E-Fan 2.0 aircraft, in addition to contributions from Airbus Group’s partners. The consortium is supported by La Nouvelle France Industrielle. The Aquitaine region is also supporting the project through a regional subsidy and the FEDER (Le Fonds Européen de Développement Regional) investment for a total of € 2.25 million.

“With this new assembly line, Airbus Group is preparing for the future and creating new jobs and business in the Aquitaine region,” he added.

Voltair SAS, created in 2014 and owned 100 percent by Airbus Group, will manage the E-Fan development, production and delivery in the Pau area. Voltair will also be in charge of selling and providing services like maintenance for the E-Fan aircraft.

E-Fan Electric Plane

Pau, which is already a regional centre for the aeronautics industry in France, was chosen as it is located close to design partner Daher and offers direct access to the runway, a medium size airport and good meteorological conditions. The purchase of the site from the current owner is due to be signed by mid-year 2015 with construction works for the FAL scheduled to start in the middle of 2016. The targeted goal for entry-into-service of the first E-Fan 2.0 is around the end of 2017 or beginning of 2018. E-Fan 2.0 is a key project in the industrial plans launched by the French government in 2013.

Airbus E-Fan Electric Aircraft

Airbus Group will bring its electric technical demonstrator aircraft, E-Fan, into serial production with the E-Fan 2.0, a two-seater version dedicated to initial pilot training. Airbus Group’s E-Fan project started in 2012 with an intensive development phase of more than 12 months.

The demonstrator aircraft was first presented at the Paris Air Show in 2013. Since its first flight on 11 March 2014, the E-Fan has performed more than 78 test flights with more than 38 flight hours in total.

The E-Fam engine

The Airbus E-Fan propulsion is provided by two electric motors with a combined power of 60 kilowatt, each driving a ducted, variable pitch fan. The duct increases the static thrust, it reduces the perceived noise and improves safety on the ground.

The E-Fan is powered by Lithium-ion polymer batteries

The E-Fan’s motors are powered by a series of 250 Volt Lithium-ion polymer batteries based on cells made by KOKAM in South Korea. They are housed within the inboard part of the wings outside the cockpit, and provided with venting and passive cooling.

E-Fan wheel and motor

Another innovation of the E-Fan is its landing gear, which consists of 2 wheels positioned fore and aft under the fuselage, plus two small wheels under the wings. The aft main wheel is driven by a 6 kilowatt electric motor, providing power for taxiing and acceleration up to 60 km/h during take-off, reducing overall electrical power consumption in day-to-day operation.

E-Fan cockpit

An optimised electrical energy management system (e-FADEC) is integrated into the aircraft, which automatically handles all electrical features, thereby simplifying the monitoring and controlling of the systems. The e-FADEC reduces the pilots’ workloads, allowing the instructor and the student to fly the aircraft and focus on the training mission.

The aim by Airbus Group is to create a family of E-Fan aircraft. The first, planned to enter service in 2018, will be the E-Fan 2.0 which will be configured with side-by-side seating for the instructor and student. A larger E-Fan 4.0 variant is scheduled to arrive in 2019. This aircraft will also have a combustion engine to increase its range.

It’s looking good for Thailand in 2015 as tourism takes off in January

Feb 3, 2015

It’s been though over the past year or so but Thailand expects to enjoy a steady increase in international visitor numbers and revenue in the first quarter of this year, following a strong growth in January. With high demand from the China market for the Chinese New Year holiday period, the promotional efforts by the kingdom’s tourism stakeholders to attract more tourists is paying off.

Visit Pattaya Thailand

In January 2015, Thailand welcomed a total of 2.65 million foreign tourists and generated about 120 billion Baht in revenue, representing a year-on-year increase of 15.9 per cent and 12.7 per cent, respectively.

H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports said, “The strong performance in January can be attributed to the significant growth in tourist arrivals at international airports throughout the kingdom, with China being the largest market. We expect to continue to enjoy a steady increase in the first quarter, especially in February due to the high demand from the China market during this coming Lunar New Year.”

Thailand is home to the world’s largest Chinatown (in Yaowarat, Bangkok), which is also the location for the nation’s biggest Chinese New Year celebrations. But travellers are also invited to enjoy a rich and diverse cultural mix of festivities that take place at key destinations up and down the kingdom, including Phuket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Trang, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Songkhla (Hat Yai), Ayutthaya, Chon Buri (Pattaya), and Chiang Mai.

Thai Airways Airbus A380

One of six Thia Airways A380 aircraft

With Thai Airways offering direct flights into the country with its modern aircraft fleet and the continue improvements to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok the country is not only a great location for tourists but also for business travellers. The country provides ideal facilities for business conferences and trade shows and with the continual improvement to an already impressive airport, as reported in the Bangkok Post, its popularity should continue.

To ensure a steady growth for Thailand’s tourism, the Thai government is working on a number of policies and strategies to attract international visitors to visit the kingdom and to encourage Thai people to take more trips within the country. They include the launch of the “2015 Discover Thainess” campaign, as a way to promote Thailand’s natural and cultural assets among Thais and foreigners as well as to pass on the Thai way of happiness to international visitors.

Thailand Events and Festivals

In addition, last week, the government announced that Monday, 4 May, 2015, will be an extra holiday (ideal for Star Wars fans!) with the objective of promoting tourism as a long holiday, from 1-5 May, would encourage Thais to travel and would boost the economy.

H.E. Kobkarn said, “Thailand will also continue to enhance cooperation across the spectrum of tourism to promote intra-ASEAN tourism as well as position the region as a single tourist destination. And, along with all our ASEAN neighbours, we will continue to forge stronger collaborations with our global partners under the ASEAN plus China, Japan, Republic of Korea cooperation mechanism, or the ASEAN+3 Framework.”

In order to ensure a strong presence for Thai tourism in the global market, Thailand through the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will continue to be presented at all major and important travel trade shows as well as organise regular road shows to update all tourism offers to any potential market.
