We keep saying it – Air New Zealand has done it again!

The airline has teamed up with the All Blacks and an all-star line-up of international rugby greats to tackle the airline’s latest on board safety video, Men in Black Safety Defenders.

Inspired by the Columbia Pictures global film franchise Men in Black, Air New Zealand’s latest safety instalment features All Blacks’ Captain Richie McCaw and Dan Carter as Men in Black agents.

Starring alongside the two long-serving All Blacks is Coach Steve Hansen, team mates Kieran Read, Keven Mealamu, Sam Whitelock and Israel Dagg who gets to test his vocals alongside Kiwi musician Stan Walker.

American actor Rip Torn reprises his role as Chief of the Men in Black with Wallabies great David Campese, former England Captain Martin Johnson and former Argentinean Captain Agustin Pichot making cameo appearances.

The video was created in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment‘s Content Licensing group, with additional support from Sony Pictures Imageworks and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Archives & Collections.

“We’ve worked with the All Blacks on previous safety videos and thought it would be fun this time around to have them step into the shoes of the other highly trained Men in Black. The result is not only entertaining but makes people sit up and take notice of the key safety messages.”

All Blacks Captain Richie McCaw says the players had a great time making the video.

“We had a lot of laughs on set and were blown away by Israel’s hidden singing talent. If rugby doesn’t work out for him he clearly has a promising career as a back-up singer.”

Israel Dagg says growing up he was a huge fan of the Men in Black films.

“I grew up listening to the iconic Men in Black movie soundtrack song. Hopefully I’ve done it some justice.”

Australian Wallabies great David Campese admitted his appearance in Men in Black Safety Defenders is likely to come at a cost.

“I’m expecting to get a right ribbing from my mates for appearing in a video promoting the All Blacks, Australia’s key opponents. They’ll never let me live it down.”

Former Argentina Captain Agustin Pichot and Martin Johnson, former England Captain shared his sentiment.

“The All Blacks are staunch rivals of the Pumas making it especially fun to play the role of their nemesis in Air New Zealand’s new safety video,” says Mr Pichot.

“I’m a big fan of Air New Zealand so was excited to get the call up to appear in the airline’s latest inflight video. I’m sure English rugby fans will have a few words to say about my appearance alongside the All Blacks too,” says Mr Johnson.

New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Officer Steve Tew says it’s a big year for the All Blacks and with plenty of travel on the cards the team was keen to be involved in delivering the airline’s safety briefing to fellow customers.

“Air New Zealand’s been a long-time supporter of the All Blacks and New Zealand Rugby and has played a crucial role in connecting the team to fans across the globe through inventive and colourful marketing efforts such as this.”

Pilots show how to land a British Airways Airbus A320 at Funchal Airport

A new video from British Airways now gives its passengers a pilot’s eye view of landing into one of its newest and tricky destinations – Funchal, on the island of Madeira.

The airport – one of the most challenging landings on the airline’s worldwide network – requires special approval from the Portuguese aviation authority for pilots to fly there. British Airways’ expert pilot training team created a bespoke plan that has received approval and allowed the airline to start flying to Funchal.

Pilots flying the three times a week service from Gatwick must undergo specialist training, including flight simulation to study every aspect of the approach in detail.

The airline started flying three times a week from Gatwick to Funchal on May 11, 2015.

In this video two of the airline’s highly trained pilots, British Airways Captains Ally Wilcox and Ian Mills, show how it’s done.

Singapore Airlines celebrate nation’s 50th with special A380 livery

Singapore Airlines is celebrating the nation’s Golden Jubilee by having two Airbus A380 aircraft in a special livery, featuring a large Singapore flag themed design on the fuselage.

The first aircraft with the commemorative livery will take to the skies in early June and the second in July. The A380s will be in the livery until the end of 2015, with the aircraft serving Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai,
New Delhi, Shanghai, Sydney and Zurich routes.

The A380 is the world’s largest aircraft and the special livery features a 10m tall and 47m long Singapore flag themed design on both sides of the fuselage. On the two inboard engines is the official SG50 logo.

“Our success is closely tied to the success of Singapore. What better way to celebrate SG50 than by proudly flying the national flag around the world on the world’s largest aircraft,” said Singapore Airlines CEO, Mr Goh Choon Phong.

Aviation enthusiasts will be able to get their hands on a collectible aircraft model in the special livery. A 1:200 scale model and a limited edition 1:100 scale model will be available from KrisShop from July.

The special livery is one of many initiatives by Singapore Airlines to celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday.

A special A380 Charity Flight is planned for 29 May, on which some 300 beneficiaries of Community Chest will experience a three hour flight. Beneficiaries will include children with special needs, adults with disabilities, as well as disadvantaged elderly and families, many of whom have never had the opportunity to take a flight.

Singapore Airlines is also organising an art competition, in conjunction with an Open House of the Airline’s training facilities on 25th July 2015. The theme of the competition is “Celebrating SG50 with SIA: Growing with the Nation”. Secondary and tertiary students, up to age 30, can submit digital copies of artwork, accompanied by a description of not more than 100 words, via www.SIAopenhouse.com, up to 30th June 2015.

Children aged between 3 and 12 can also participate in an on the spot drawing and colouring competition during the SIA Open House. The Open House, details of which will be announced shortly, will provide a rare opportunity for the public to see the inner workings of the airline, at the facility where rigorous training is provided to cabin crew and pilots.

A Colorado computer hacker told the FBI that he briefly made an airliner fly sideways by hacking its computer system, according to a report. Chris Roberts, who runs a cybersecurity consulting firm, told FBI agents in Syracuse in April that he pulled
As yet the aircraft manufactures haven’t been talking about the possible consequences if someone can hack a plane or if they believe their aircraft are open to such threats. In the meantime Chris wont be saying too much at the moment.

At the moment we await any further information but all of this isn’t new. If it is possible to hack a plane and take control through the IFE you would hope that the right people are on the case. In the meantime flying is still one of the safest forms of transport so do enjoy your travels.

Airbus E-Fan electric plane project takes off with new factory in Pau

Airbus Group has agreed with the Aquitaine region to build the Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the Airbus E-Fan 2.0 all-electric aircraft in Pau, southwest France.

The decision was announced by Airbus Group Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Jean Botti and Alain Rousset, President of the Aquitaine region, during a press conference in Bordeaux, the capital city of Aquitaine.

“We have reached the next milestone in our Airbus Group E-Aircraft roadmap. The industrialisation of our Airbus E-Fan aircraft will help us to advance electric flight and also to gain experience to scale up the technology,” said Jean Botti, Airbus Group CTO.

Airbus Group will invest € 20 million in the overall design and development of the E-Fan 2.0 aircraft, in addition to contributions from Airbus Group’s partners. The consortium is supported by La Nouvelle France Industrielle. The Aquitaine region is also supporting the project through a regional subsidy and the FEDER (Le Fonds Européen de Développement Regional) investment for a total of € 2.25 million.

“With this new assembly line, Airbus Group is preparing for the future and creating new jobs and business in the Aquitaine region,” he added.

Voltair SAS, created in 2014 and owned 100 percent by Airbus Group, will manage the E-Fan development, production and delivery in the Pau area. Voltair will also be in charge of selling and providing services like maintenance for the E-Fan aircraft.

E-Fan Electric Plane

Pau, which is already a regional centre for the aeronautics industry in France, was chosen as it is located close to design partner Daher and offers direct access to the runway, a medium size airport and good meteorological conditions. The purchase of the site from the current owner is due to be signed by mid-year 2015 with construction works for the FAL scheduled to start in the middle of 2016. The targeted goal for entry-into-service of the first E-Fan 2.0 is around the end of 2017 or beginning of 2018. E-Fan 2.0 is a key project in the industrial plans launched by the French government in 2013.

Airbus E-Fan Electric Aircraft

Airbus Group will bring its electric technical demonstrator aircraft, E-Fan, into serial production with the E-Fan 2.0, a two-seater version dedicated to initial pilot training. Airbus Group’s E-Fan project started in 2012 with an intensive development phase of more than 12 months.

The demonstrator aircraft was first presented at the Paris Air Show in 2013. Since its first flight on 11 March 2014, the E-Fan has performed more than 78 test flights with more than 38 flight hours in total.

The Airbus E-Fan propulsion is provided by two electric motors with a combined power of 60 kilowatt, each driving a ducted, variable pitch fan. The duct increases the static thrust, it reduces the perceived noise and improves safety on the ground.

The E-Fan is powered by Lithium-ion polymer batteries

The E-Fan’s motors are powered by a series of 250 Volt Lithium-ion polymer batteries based on cells made by KOKAM in South Korea. They are housed within the inboard part of the wings outside the cockpit, and provided with venting and passive cooling.

Another innovation of the E-Fan is its landing gear, which consists of 2 wheels positioned fore and aft under the fuselage, plus two small wheels under the wings. The aft main wheel is driven by a 6 kilowatt electric motor, providing power for taxiing and acceleration up to 60 km/h during take-off, reducing overall electrical power consumption in day-to-day operation.

E-Fan cockpit

An optimised electrical energy management system (e-FADEC) is integrated into the aircraft, which automatically handles all electrical features, thereby simplifying the monitoring and controlling of the systems. The e-FADEC reduces the pilots’ workloads, allowing the instructor and the student to fly the aircraft and focus on the training mission.

The aim by Airbus Group is to create a family of E-Fan aircraft. The first, planned to enter service in 2018, will be the E-Fan 2.0 which will be configured with side-by-side seating for the instructor and student. A larger E-Fan 4.0 variant is scheduled to arrive in 2019. This aircraft will also have a combustion engine to increase its range.
