TAT and Thailand Airports Authority sign MoU to promote tourism

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has signed a broad ranging agreement with Airports of Thailand Public Limited Company (AOT) to promote Thailand as the Aviation Hub of Asia and grow the number of airlines and air travellers flying to, from and through Thailand.

The MOU was signed by Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, and Mr. Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, AOT President.

The signing was witnessed by Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Asia and South Pacific), Mr. Tanes Petsuwan, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas), Mr. Phet Chancharoen, Director of Don Mueang International Airport, Mr. Sirote Duangrat, Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Mrs. Monrudee Gettuphan, Director of Phuket International Airport, and other distinguished guests.

AOT owns and operates six international airports in Thailand including Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai. These account for more than 90 per cent of the total visitor arrivals to Thailand.

The MOU commits the two sides to undertake joint campaigns and other activities to attract more airlines to fly to Thailand and more visitors to transit through Thai airports.

Both sides will use all their media and distribution channels to publicise their respective activities, including websites, print publications, social media and others. They will also do joint marketing at global travel and aviation events that they attend; such as, The Routes Events, Routes Asia, and World Routes.

The two sides will formulate a joint annual action plan that will identify specific activities to be undertaken in various markets and hold monthly meetings to ensure that the plan is being properly implemented.

One key aspect of the agreement will be the sharing of information on market trends and traveller demographics through their respective databases and global networks.

Mr. Yuthasak said, “Aviation is the lifeblood of the Thai tourism industry, so it is only natural that we should forge close marketing cooperation linkages with Airports of Thailand and help them attract more airlines, especially to secondary airports; such as, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai.”

He noted that TAT will work to convert today’s transit passengers into tomorrow’s tourists and also make better use of the opportunities to conduct extensive market research about the visitors experiences while visiting Thailand.

In January – November 2016, international passenger movements (arrivals, departures and transit) through all the six airports under AoT’s control totalled 61.4 million, and domestic passenger movements totalled 48.1 million.

Cathay Pacific moves New York JFK operations to Terminal 8

Cathay Pacific will relocate its operations at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Terminal 8, commencing on the 15th January, in a move that will benefit its customers through added convenience and enhanced connectivity.

The relocation, which sees Hong Kong’s home carrier shift its passenger handling services from Terminal 7, will provide its customers with a more seamless travel experience when connecting to flights operated by Cathay Pacific’s oneworld partner, American Airlines, which has a significant presence at Terminal 8.

The new American Airlines’ Admirals Club in Terminal 8 will adopt the same design concept as its lounge in São Paulo when it fully reopens in April.

Flight CX845, with a scheduled departure of 00.45 local time on the 15th January, will be Cathay Pacific’s final departure from Terminal 7. All subsequent flights to Hong Kong will depart from Terminal 8, which is the largest passenger terminal at JFK and twice the size of Madison Square Garden.

Cathay Pacific Director Service Delivery James Ginns said: “Moving our operations to Terminal 8 at JFK, the home of our oneworld partner American Airlines, will improve our passengers’ travel experience considerably. The first-rate facilities and amenities available, in addition to the significant connectivity advantages that the move brings, will further enhance the delivery of our brand promise of a Life Well Travelled.”

All Cathay Pacific passengers will enjoy the myriad dining, retail and entertainment facilities that the terminal provides before boarding their flights, while First and Business Class passengers, in addition to eligible Marco Polo Club members, will have the option of relaxing in American Airlines’ lounges – the Admirals Club or the Flagship Lounge, which is set to be the most impressive on the airline’s network once extensive renovations are completed in April.

The Flagship Lounge, which will feature updated interiors, more space, additional privacy and a more personalised service, will also see the introduction of Flagship First Dining, meaning passengers can choose from a seasonal, multi-course menu that features fresh, regionally-inspired dishes designed by an Executive Chef.

Cathay Pacific operates more non-stop flights between Hong Kong and New York than any other airline, connecting two of the world’s most important financial centres with four daily services to New York, including one via Vancouver and one daily flight to Newark Liberty International Airport.

In total, Cathay Pacific operates 108 scheduled passenger flights per week to North America, including 84 flights per week to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles New York and San Francisco in the United States and 24 flights per week to Toronto and Vancouver in Canada.

Dubai Airport Travel Tips as it welcomes 7 million passengers in December

Dubai International (DXB) is full of festive cheer as it prepares to welcome some 7 million passengers during December with an exciting array of seasonal activities, promotions, prize giveaways and entertainment for passengers at the world’s leading international hub.

“Nearly a quarter of a million passengers will be passing through the airport daily during the seasonal peak and we want to ensure they start enjoying their vacation as soon as they reach DXB,” said Anita Mehra, Senior Vice President of Communication & Reputation at Dubai Airports.

With schools across the UAE closing for the holidays mid-month, Dubai Airports is anticipating near-record numbers in December with peak traffic anticipated on December 16, 17 and 22. As is the case during each peak traffic season, Dubai Airports, in collaboration with airlines and other partners at DXB is taking a number of measures to ensure passenger volumes don’t affect service.

Dubai Airports will augment staff levels and employ new passenger flow monitoring technology that allows the airport, airlines and control authorities to detect and deploy staff to areas of high passenger concentrations. Further, the airport’s new smart gate service, which allows the use of Emirates ID cards upon arrival and departure, will reduce immigration transaction times to 10-15 seconds and alleviate congestion at immigration points.

Dubai Airports has also issued holiday season smart travel tips to support passenger convenience during the holiday travel peak.

Smart Airport Travel Tips:

  • Be sure to check which airport and terminal you are departing from/arriving into beforehand. Passengers can confirm with their airline.
  • Arrive early at the airport. It is best to leave a minimum of three hours for check-in and passport control. Take into consideration daily rush hours and available routes in calculating your commuting time to the airport.
  • Leave extra time for your journey to the airport as the roads will be very busy. Please say your goodbyes at home.
  • Check with the airline in advance for information on your baggage allowance. Irrespective of the allowance, a single unit of baggage weighing more than 32kgs will not be accepted at check-in. You should expect to be charged for baggage more than the limit set by your respective airline.
  • It is always simpler to pack liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in your check-in baggage. However, if you must carry LAGs in your hand luggage, make sure they are in a clear re-sealable plastic bag. Each item should not be more than 100ml and the total content of all items should not be more than one litre.
  • Beat the queues by checking-in online or using the self-service check-in kiosks in the departures hall. Customers with baggage can make use of the quick-baggage drop counters, while those carrying only hand luggage can proceed directly to Immigration.
  • Remember to put anything metal – watch, jewellery, mobile phone, coins, belt – into your hand luggage well before you arrive at the X-ray machine. This will save time at security screening.
  • UAE residents are encouraged to use Emirates ID cards at any smart gate which helps avoid queuing at passport control, both while arriving and on departure.

Lufthansa celebrates 60 years of flights from Manchester Airport

Lufthansa is celebrating 60 years of flights from Manchester reaching new heights with passenger figures for the first four months of 2016 showing four per cent growth compared with the same period last year.

FAA Tests FBI Drone Detection System at JFK Airport

The FAA and its government partners are expanding research on ways to detect “rogue” drones around airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and its government, industry and academia partners have joined forces to evaluate the detection technology at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York.

Over the last two years, the FAA has received numerous reports from pilots and residents about unmanned aircraft systems – UAS, or “drones” – around some of the nation’s busiest airports, including JFK.

“We face many difficult challenges as we integrate rapidly evolving UAS technology into our complex and highly regulated airspace,” said Marke “Hoot” Gibson, FAA Senior Advisor on UAS Integration.

“This effort at JFK reflects everyone’s commitment to safety.”

Drone Detection System

Since the 2nd May the FAA conducted evaluations at JFK to study the effectiveness of a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) UAS detection system in a commercial airport environment. Five different rotorcraft and fixed wing UAS participated in the evaluations, and about 40 separate tests took place.

The JFK drone evaluation involved extensive government inter-agency collaboration, and cooperation from industry and academia. The tests expanded on research performed earlier this year at Atlantic City International Airport.

In addition to the FAA and the FBI, the agencies combining forces in this research included the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Justice, Queens District Attorney’s Office and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. DHS and the FBI want to identify unauthorized UAS operators for law enforcement purposes, and the FAA’s mission is to provide a safe and efficient airport environment for both manned and unmanned air traffic.

“We applaud the FBI and FAA for their efforts to detect and track unmanned aerial systems (UAS),” said Thomas Bosco, Port Authority Aviation Director.

“We look forward to supporting continued U.S. Government efforts to identify and deploy countermeasures to neutralize the threat posed by rogue UASs.”

The team evaluating the FBI’s detection system also included contributions from one of the six FAA-designated UAS test sites. The Griffiss International Airport test site in Rome, NY, provided expertise in planning the individual tests as well as the flight commander for the tests and two of the UAS used.

The FY 2016 Appropriations law mandates that the FAA continue research into detection of UAS in airport environments. The agency is continuing to formulate an inter-agency strategy to evaluate detection systems in a variety of airport environments.

Etihad Airways has opened its spectacular new Premium Lounge at Melbourne Airport, offering guests a stylish, comfortable environment in which they can relax, re-energise, dine, work or be entertained pre-flight.

A natural light filled space with floor-to-ceiling glass, it offers expansive views across the runway. At more than 800m2 with seating capacity for up to 133 guests, it is the airline’s largest Premium Lounge outside Abu Dhabi. The centrepiece for passengers is the intimate 26-seat dining area. Here guests will enjoy the airline’s signature hospitality with restaurant-style a la carte dining and an international buffet.

The kitchen prides itself on making everything in-house. Professional chefs prepare each dish on site using the freshest, locally sourced, seasonal produce. This includes bread – fresh-baked twice daily – grissini breadsticks; dips such as hummus, baba ghanoush and muhammara; pickles; labneh; cookies; and even ice-cream.

Cheeses, fruits and vegetables are sourced from Victorian suppliers and coffee is from a Melbourne-based roaster.

Another striking feature is the sculptural showcase bar. Here guests can enjoy a selection of refreshments with names like Flight Path Spritzer, Controlled Airspace, Winglet and Nacelle. Like the food on the lounge menu, these one-of-a-kind, bespoke beverages are all handmade by specially trained mixologists, using syrups and garnishes that are made in-house.

United Celebrates 30 Years at Washington Dulles Airport

In May 1986, United Airlines commenced hub operations at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) with 58 departures serving 24 destinations. Today, United celebrates three decades of serving the airport as a hub and more than 50 years serving the capital region, connecting customers to 83 global destinations with more than 200 departures, including capital-to-capital service to nearly 40 airports worldwide.

The lounge is open to First and Business Class passengers travelling on Cathay Pacific and members of the Marco Polo Club with Silver Card status or above and members of all tiers who earn lounge passes and/or their friends and family, including oneworld members with Sapphire status or above. The Cathay Pacific Lounge is open daily from 10.30 am to 3.00 pm and 8.00 pm to 2.00 am, but adjusted seasonally according to the Cathay Pacific flight schedule.

Award-winning London designer joins Match Made in HEL runway fashion show

Finnair and Helsinki Airport operator Finavia have announced the UK representative who will be taking to the tarmac for their unique fashion show concept. London-based Turkish designer Bora Aksu will fly the flag for the UK as Runway 2 of Helsinki Airport is transformed into the ultimate fashion catwalk for the latest Match Made in HEL event on the 24th May.

Six other top designers from China, Korea, Japan, Sweden, Denmark and Finland will present their collections alongside Aksu, showcasing some of the most innovative designs from around the world.

A graduate of the prestigious Central St Martin’s arts college in London, Aksu’s critically-acclaimed debut show at London Fashion Week in 2003 won him the New Generation Award. Even greater success soon followed, with four consecutive New Generation Awards given to Aksu who remains an integral part of the official London Fashion Week schedule.

Aksu collaborates with some of the world’s most recognisable fashion brands, including Nike, Converse and Topshop, while his pioneering designs have graced seven windows at Selfridges department store in London. Hollywood stars Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley are among those who Aksu has dressed for film junkets.

Ahead of the event, Bora Aksu said: “I am very excited to be part of this project and also super excited to be back in Helsinki”.

The designers at the Match Made in HEL eventhailed as European and Asian fashion visionaries, have been hand-picked by Tuomas Laitinen, one of Finland’s most influential fashion trendsetters, with their work representing some of the most interesting and inspiring trends emerging from key fashion hubs. With today’s announcement, Aksu joins Arashi Yanagawa from Japan and Shangguan Zhe of China at the event, with the final four designers to be revealed in the coming weeks.Finnair and Helsinki Airport together offer the smoothest connections between Europe and Asia. Finnair flies to 17 Asian destinations and over 70 European destinations via Helsinki. Helsinki Airport has grown into a major transfer hub for Asia-Europe travel, the airport is designed for smooth and fast transfers. As Finnair expands its Asian traffic, in turn Helsinki Airport will expand to support growing passenger flows. In summer 2016, Finnair will offer 77 weekly flights to Asia from Helsinki Airport.

The Match Made in HEL campaign is a joint campaign by Finnair and Finavia, the operator of Helsinki Airport, and aims to raise awareness of Finnair and Helsinki Airport as the best partners for smooth and fast air connections between Asia and Europe.
