Boeing 787-10 continues performance testing in California

The Boeing test team has put on quite the performance recently while putting the 787-10 Dreamliner through a series of flight tests. These flight tests are used to check out the Dreamliner’s performance and handling.

Boeing 787-10 Take-Off Flight Tests

During the take-off performance testing in California, the team assessed how the aircraft would behave during high speed and low speed take-off. They needed perfectly calm wind conditions for this testing, and that’s what they found at Edwards Air Force Base.

Perhaps one of the more thrilling tests for the pilots is ground effect testing, which measures the aircraft’s aerodynamic behavior low to the ground.

“We’re flying very low, just above the runway” said 787-10 chief model pilot Tim Berg.

“It’s fun and exciting for the flight test team because it’s a very dynamic environment.”

Currently the 787-10 has a range of 6430 nautical miles, 1205 less than the 787-9 although it has the capacity to carry an additional 40 passengers.

The 787-10 Dreamliner is the newest and longest member of the super-efficient 787 family. As a stretched version of the 787-9, the 787-10 leverages the family’s proven technology, long range and preferred passenger experience and with unprecedented efficiency. It has 10 percent better fuel and emissions than the best on offer by the competition and 25 percent better than the airliners it will replace.

GECAS announce order for 75 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft

GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric has announced an order for 75 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

The order, booked in December, is valued at $8.25 billion at current list prices. The follow-on order increases the GECAS firm order book for the 737 MAX to 170 airliners, the largest of any aircraft leasing company.

“These new orders will enable us to serve our clients’ needs — assisting in managing their fleets, transitioning aircraft and providing new equipment,” said Alec Burger, President and Chief Executive Officer, GECAS.

“Our customers want the latest technology and fuel efficiency, and the CFM International LEAP-1B engines on these aircraft deliver outstanding productivity and reliability in the single-aisle market.”

“When it comes to demand, this order shows the MAX 8 remains at the heart of the single-aisle market,” said Brad McMullen, vice president, North America and Leasing Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“We appreciate the confidence GECAS has in the 737 MAX, and look forward to seeing the airplanes placed with carriers all over the world.”

To date, the 737 MAX has accumulated 3,419 orders, making it the fastest-selling airplane in Boeing history.

Beechcraft to offer Pratt & Whitney engine upgrade to King Air 350 aircraft

Beechcraft today announced at the Middle East and North Africa Business Aviation Association (MEBAA) conference in Dubai that the company is now offering Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A-67A engines for improved performance on its King Air 350HW and King Air 350ER turboprops. In addition, the company is offering an increased gross weight option for these platforms, increasing the maximum takeoff weight to 17,500 pounds. Both enhancements are now FAA and EASA certified and offered as factory options for new aircraft or as aftermarket modifications.

“The 350 platform is renowned as a worldwide mission enabler and these optional enhancements will offer customers added performance and payload for special mission operations,” said Bob Gibbs, vice president of Special Mission Aircraft.

“We have successfully modified a fleet of NATO air force-operated King Air 350ER aircraft with these upgrades, and we are excited to offer these options to provide more value to our special mission customers.”

The more powerful Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6A-67A engines provide superior field and climb performance, including hot and high operations. With an outside air temperature of 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), the engine upgrade allows for a maximum takeoff gross weight increase of up to 2,700 pounds at sea level, compared to the standard aircraft. The increased gross weight option provides operators greater flexibility between payload and fuel, representing a potential increase in loiter time of two to three hours.

The King Air 350HW is a Heavy Weight (HW) version of the King Air 350 that provides operators an increased gross weight through larger and stronger main landing gear struts, wheels, tires and brakes. The King Air 350ER is an Extended Range (ER) version that includes the enhanced landing gear and increases the fuel capacity through the addition of low drag metal fuel tanks aft of the powerplants.

Airbus Group will hold its “Airnovation Summer Academy” with its partner programme member, the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), from 3-8 July 2016. The Summer Academy will bring together 40 students as well as faculty and industry experts for a week of innovation in a start-up accelerator model at TU Delft’s Faculty of Aerospace Engineering.

Students from 17 nationalities will join this Summer Academy, which is designed to mirror a typical innovation accelerator. Students were chosen based on their academic profile and a video presentation demonstrating the unique contribution they expect to bring to the Academy, including their enthusiasm for innovation and vision for the future of the aerospace sector.

Nearly 50 percent of this year’s Summary Academy participants are female students – an encouraging sign given Airbus Group’s focus on diversity. The students’ experience at the Summer Academy will help universities understand first-hand the requirements of industry. At the same time, students will get a direct insight into the skillset needed by future employers such as Airbus Group.

Over the course of the week, students will prototype aerospace concepts and work on a specific project challenge. The programme consists of a dynamic mix of inspiration and skills sessions, including a talk on the trends and technologies disrupting the aeronautics industry right now. The teams will be tasked to innovate on a typical ‘open-ended’ aerospace industry problem, with mentoring from academic and industry experts.

First demonstration tour of China for Airbus A350-XWB

The world’s newest airliner, the Airbus A350XWB, will make its first demo tour of China between the 25th  June and 2nd July. During the eight day trip, A350 XWB test aircraft MSN2 (Manufacturer serial number) will fly to Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (SHA), Guangzhou (CAN), Haikou (HAK) and Chengdu (CTU).

The tour follows the A350’s endorsement by China Eastern Airlines who ordered 20 A350-900 aircraft in April 2016. Air China also ordered 10 A350-900. The unrivalled operational performance and cabin comfort of the A350 XWB will give Chinese airlines a competitive edge and to attract more passenger on international routes. China is one of the fastest growing markets for air transport and Airbus has supplied 50 per cent of the in-service commercial aircraft fleet in China.

A350 Tour of China Begins

The tour will also show how the Chinese aviation industry has made important contributions to the development and making of the A350 XWB. Airbus (Beijing) Engineering Centre together and its partner Aviation Industry Corporation of China participated in the programme’s development, involving specific design work for the airframe. Some five percent of the airframe is manufactured in China.  The A350 XWB is a symbol of strategic industrial cooperation between Airbus and China’s aviation industry.

Featuring a distinctive “Carbon” signature livery to reflect its primary construction from advanced materials, the MSN002 is one of Airbus’ fleet of five test A350-900 aircraft and one of two with a fully functional cabin (42 business class and 210 economy class seats). The flights will be operated by Airbus flight crews.

The A350 XWB features the latest aerodynamic design, carbon fibre fuselage and wings, plus new fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce engines. Together, these latest technologies translate into unrivalled levels of operational efficiency, with a 25 per cent reduction in fuel burn and emissions, and significantly lower maintenance costs. The spaciousness, quietness, beautiful interior and ambient lighting in the cabin contribute to superior levels of comfort and well-being, setting new standards in terms of flight experience for all passengers.

To date, Airbus has recorded some 800 firm orders for the A350 XWB from 42 customers worldwide, already making it one of the most successful widebody aircraft ever.

Boeing 737 MAX Continues Flight Testing In Skies Of South America

The testing of Boeing’s latest 737 has continued as the aircraft has been flying in the skies of south america. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 has marked a key achievement after completing high altitude flight testing in La Paz, Bolivia. It’s the first international trip for the 737 MAX flight-test fleet.

The airport’s 13,300-foot (4,050-meter) altitude tested the MAX’s capability to take off and land at high altitudes, which can affect overall airplane performance.

Flight testing for the 737 MAX is on schedule with three test airplanes having completed more than 100 flights combined. The fourth and final test airplane will make its first flight in the coming weeks. The program remains on track for first delivery in the third quarter of 2017.

JetBlue take delivery of first Airbus A321 from the American assembly line

Were you watching yesterday on Periscope as the first ever delivery of an Airbus aircraft from the U.S. Manufacturing Facility took place yesterday? In Mobile, Alabama the entire team of employees from the American assembly line gathered to present their very first completed product, an Airbus A321, to JetBlue. On hand for the occasion were executives from Airbus, JetBlue senior management, including President and CEO Robin Hayes and a broad collection of dignitaries from the Gulf Coast region.

Airbus announced its commitment to build a single-aisle assembly line in Mobile, Alabama in 2012, and less than one year later, broke ground on the $600 million (U.S.) facility. The ceremonial inauguration of the plant came in September 2015. The aircraft delivered today, a JetBlue A321, successfully had its first flight on March 21st, 2016.

In addition to the JetBlue A321 delivered today, there are currently nine other A320 Family aircraft in production at the facility. Airbus anticipates delivering four aircraft per month from the Mobile plant by the end of 2017. The initial deliveries will all be A320 Family aircraft with the Current Engine Option (CEO), but will begin transitioning to New Engine Option (NEO) derivatives in late 2017.

Boeing selects TRU Simulation + Training for 777X Flight Simulator Suites

Boeing has announced it has selected TRU Simulation + Training, a Textron Inc. company (TRU) as its first 777X full-flight simulator suite supplier for Boeing’s pro forma campuses. Pro forma training is offered to customers as part of the aircraft sale.

Each simulator suite will include a full-flight simulator and a high-fidelity, flat-panel classroom trainer. TRU will also provide a simulator to assist with Boeing’s engineering development of the 777X. The suites are scheduled to be operational in 2019.

“Our customers depend on high quality training assets and very reliable full-flight simulators to train their pilots,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president, Boeing Flight Services, “We are proud to once again work with TRU to create state-of-the-art training devices.”

This is the second contract awarded to TRU to manufacture simulator suites for Boeing. In 2014, Boeing awarded the company a 737 MAX simulator contract, and Boeing currently has four full flight simulators on order.

“We are delighted with the continued trust Boeing is placing in our company, which clearly identifies TRU as a leading supplier in the flight simulation and training industry,” said George Karam, Vice President and General Manager, Air Transport division, TRU Simulation + Training.

Until the suites are operational, customers can train current pilots in the 777 full-flight simulator and take a short differences training course to transition to the new aircraft type.

Boeing Flight Services provides flight, maintenance and cabin safety training to more than 400 customers through its network of 16 campuses on six continents.

The 777X has 320 orders and commitments from six customers worldwide. The new aircraft will be the largest and most efficient twin-engine jet in the world, with 12 percent lower fuel consumption and 10 percent lower operating costs than the competition. In addition, the 777X will bring cabin innovations and improved levels of passenger comfort.

Pearl Harbor Museum to display rare WWII Japanese Torpedo Plane #avgeek

The Nakajima B5N Torpedo Bomber was the pride of the Imperial Japanese Navy and was considered the most effective aircraft of its kind at the beginning of World War II. She caused most of the battleship damage during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, 7th December 1941. “This aircraft is one of a few known to have survived the war,” said Kenneth DeHoff, executive director of Pacific Aviation Museum.

“An estimated 1,149 B5N’s were built, and only bits and pieces survive today, except for this Kate with its intriguing history.”

Work has begun on the Kate’s fuselage and wings in the Museum’s Lt. Ted Shealy’s Restoration Shop, located in historic Hangar 79.

“We expect it will take five years to restore the B5N for static display quality” according to DeHoff.

“With this year being the 75th Anniversary of the attack on the harbor, the Museum is honored to be able to display the Kate where she made aviation history, sharing a legacy with thousands of visitors worldwide.”

Pacific Aviation Museum is located on Historic Ford Island, where some of the first bombs fell during the attack on Pearl Harbor, 7th December 1941. Visitors to the Museum can see remnants from that day of infamy, including the 158-foot tall, red and white iconic Ford Island Air Field Control Tower; Hangar 37; and Hangar 79, where bullet holes still remain.

Through its preservation and restoration of World War II fighter planes and accompanying artifacts in the Museum’s historic hangars, Pacific Aviation Museum shares the story of the vital role aviation played in the winning of World War II, and its continuing role in maintaining America’s freedom.

Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Its mission is to develop and maintain an internationally recognised aviation museum on Historic Ford Island that educates young and old alike, honours aviators and their support personnel who defended freedom in The Pacific Region, and to preserve Pacific aviation history.
